More about Ossian Sweet

Ossian Sweet (October 1895–20 March 1960) was an American physician. He is most notable for his self defense in 1925 of his newly-purchased home in a predominantly white neighborhood against a mob attempting to force him out of the neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan.  The subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury of murder charges against him, his family, and friends who helped defend his home, came to be known as the Sweet Trials.  For more information, click here.

Press Release for Burden of Justice Staged Reading

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

BURDEN OF JUSTICE STAGED READING AT THE BROOMFIELD AUDITORIUM

The public is invited to attend a rare event on Sunday afternoon,
September 18, 2011, from one to three PM.  GhostCry Productions
presents a staged reading of a new screenplay, Burden of Justice.

This is the story of an American dream gone terribly wrong.  In
Detroit in 1925, one of the most explosive trials in history divided a
nation along racial lines.  An African American doctor, Ossian Sweet,
defended his home in an all white neighborhood, against a violent mob.
A bystander was shot and killed.  Dr. Sweet, his wife, family members
and friends were put on trial for thier lives, with little hope for
success. Clarence Darrow, the “Great Defender”, one of the most
controversial lawyers of all time, took their case.

The screenplay is by Karilyn T. Starks, who has optioned material to
an executive producer for a major television production company.  The
staged reading is directed by Michael T. Starks, who has created
several short movies and a full-length modern adaptation of Macbeth.
The event is going to be performed at the Broomfield Auditorium and is
sponsored by Boulder Community Media, a non-profit organization.  The
performance is free to attend, and donations are welcome.

The staged reading features performances by many talented local
actors, including:  Tom Jerke (Clarrence Darrow), Gene Horne (Ossian
Sweet), Alfred Ferrari, Arthur Martinez, Ashley M. Kalfas, Carol Anne
Lopez, Carol Rust, Daniel Seifert, David Lasker, Daniel Fiamengo,
Kevin Rostad, Kris Thompson, Lindsey Calvert, Rachael West, Tim
Johnson, and Wyatt MacNeil.

The screenplay is based on actual events.  Our staged reading may
influence how the final draft is prepared for agents and producers in
Hollywood.  We hope to raise awareness of issues of prejudice that
remain to this day, to provide critical feedback to the author to
improve the screenplay, and to give actors the opportunity to play
real characters from history.  This process provides the foundation
for a movie project that could generate revenue for the film community
in our state.
